The first Stardust Casino was opened on July 2, 1958, by a consortium of online casino investors led by Moe Dalitz. Located at 3000 Las Vegas Boulevard South, this initial iteration of the casino quickly gained popularity among locals and tourists alike due to its upscale atmosphere and generous gaming options. The property featured over 700 slot machines, 10 table games, and a luxurious hotel with 1,500 rooms.
Stardust Casino’s success was largely attributed to its strategic location near the Las Vegas Airport, making it an ideal stopover for travelers passing through Sin City. Its proximity to other notable hotels and casinos also helped drive foot traffic and business.
Mid-Century Modern Era (1970s-1980s)
As the 1960s gave way to the 1970s, Stardust Casino underwent significant renovations aimed at maintaining its competitive edge in a rapidly changing market. The casino added more gaming options, including craps and roulette tables, as well as an expanded entertainment complex featuring top performers.
However, it was not until 1985 that the Stardust truly solidified its position as one of Las Vegas’ premier destinations. A massive renovation project transformed the property into a sleek, modern resort with over 1,100 hotel rooms, new gaming areas, and enhanced amenities like an upscale spa and pool facilities.
Expansion and Decline (1990s-2012)
The 1990s saw continued investment in Stardust Casino’s infrastructure, including the construction of a luxury wing called “Westin Tower” featuring high-end accommodations. However, with the dawn of the new millennium came growing competition from newer, more modern casinos like the Bellagio and MGM Grand.
As the gaming landscape shifted towards more elaborate resort experiences and lucrative player rewards programs, Stardust struggled to maintain its edge in terms of revenue. In an effort to compete, it invested heavily in refurbishments and renovations during this period but ultimately could not keep pace with rival properties.
Demise and Rebirth (2012-Present)
In March 2011, Boyd Gaming announced plans to rebrand the Stardust as “Echelon Place,” a $4.8 billion mega-resort slated for completion by 2017. Although construction began in earnest that November, delays and cost overruns led to abandonment of this project in December 2013.
The site was subsequently purchased by AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group), which proposed an ambitious development known as “Stardust Resort.” This revamp included a 1.6 million-square-foot entertainment district with office space for the Las Vegas Convention Center, among other features.
Unfortunately, funding issues plagued this project from its inception, forcing it into hiatus in August 2014. At present, little progress has been made toward breaking ground on “Stardust Resort.”
